The Basics

What are the different types of adoption that your agency does? Our agency is licensed and experienced in doing Domestic, Independent, International, Relative, Step-Parent, and Special Needs adoptions. Visit Our Programs to learn more about these types of adoption.

What is a Homestudy? A homestudy consists of three to four visits with one of our Adoption Social Workers. The study allows us to get to know you and evaluate your ability to be an adoptive parent. Typically the homestudy involves meeting with you as a couple, separately as individuals, and a visit to your home. Think of it as an education process.

How long does the process take? Generally, once we have a completed application from you, the process for completing the homestudy is six to eight weeks. Once the homestudy is done, you can begin the steps you need to take for the specific type of adoption you are pursuing.

What are your requirements? Adoption Services will accept applications and study potential adoptive parents without regard to race, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation. Our requirements are minimal; they are based on what we see as best for an adoptee and the interests of the agency. Please contact any of our offices for a complete list of requirements.

Can I adopt if I am single? Yes! Being a single parent can't stop you from adopting. You will have to explore the different types of adoption and see which will best fit your current situation and family needs.

Can I adopt if I am gay or lesbian? Yes! Adoption Services will work with anyone who would like to pursue adoption. However, if you are in a same sex partnership, you should be aware that only one individual could legally adopt the child. Wisconsin law states that if unmarried persons pursue adoption, only one of the persons can be the legal parent. Talk to one of our Adoption Social Workers for more information.
